CHOREOGRAPHIC WORK:ANGEL DOWN

“In an aptly abrupt cut from black, Smith appeared suddenly contorted and laying face-down, seemingly broken or fallen from grace. Their almost-drag-makeup and vibrant outfit – a pink two-piece and elongated makeshift platform boots – quickly built upon this character introduction. What followed was a disarmingly nuanced performance of someone finding their voice and strength. Smith’s purposefully dissonant movements, alternating between vulnerability, physicality and control, were a Tomorrow Makers highlight.’

As a young Queer person, I lacked elders. I lacked sign posts on
a way of being that aligned with how I perceived the world to be. I
retreated into the shadows and became an observer.
From this place, my Angel was born; a quiet voice within,
whispering, hinting. A tiny tap on the shoulder to say ‘it’s okay,
you can go this way instead.’
Out of fear, I didn’t always listen.
Yet after 32 years, I’m relinquishing control.
Here is the Angel. Here is our power.
Here is my Camp-y call to you;
I declare my existence.
